About
Buffo's Wake takes the style of Eastern European gypsy music and spins it on its head with a dark and macabre twist. Formed in Brighton in October 2010, Buffo's Wake had an amazing summer that year, recording live sessions for the BBC, playing at over 15 festivals throughout the UK, storming the likes of Secret Garden and Boomtown and playing some amazing shows up and down the country.
Their strange and unique blend of Gypsy Punk and Horror Folk has captivated audiences and critics alike throughout the year resulting in a well deserved reputation as one of Brighton's best and most energetic live bands. With snarling vocals, offbeat lyrics and sweeping violins, they constantly find themselves standing out from any other band or scene in an otherwise stagnant musical climate.
They take their influences from an eclectic array of artists such as the genius that is Tom Waits, Violent Femmes, Tiger Lilies, The Pixies, Gogol Bordello and Nick Cave, who is also a fan - having seen Buffo's Wake play, he went out of his way to commend their style and performance.
They have just finished their first mini album entitled "Horror Folk" and plan on once again storming throughout the country delivering high octane multi-cultural beats and captivating melodies until festival season, where they will once again bring their twisted gypsy cabaret to the masses.
"Dark twisting melodies, maudlin lyrics and intense breaks give this new band, who debuted in Brighton last Halloween, their ethereal power. Sounds like the gate has swung shut behind you at the abandoned fairground" – Playgroup Brighton
"You may recall a desolate band of misfits in Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas that popped up every now and then with musical interludes of damp and haunting melodies that were, in their own way, quite captivating. Well Buffo's Wake have a very similar allure; that is intriguing violins and erratic accordions, both utterly besmirched with wonderfully gloomy undertones and lingering vocals" - Stuart Mason, Geeks.co.uk
"Buffo's Wake delight in sudden gear shifts, baffling non-sequiturs and a healthy sense of the absurd, and are undoubtedly the perfect accompaniment to an evening of knees-up silliness, preferably having consumed an obscene quantity of cider" - electricharmonymusic.blogspot.com
Where are they based?
Buffo's Wake is based in Brighton and have spent the bulk of their career playing around the Sussex area. However, due to their rapidly growing popularity, Buffo's Wake are starting to frequent London and Bristol more.
