Freak act serves the drinks and the laughs at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The Diva and pianist

One of the many perks about working in this glorious industry during the Edinburgh Fringe is the comps and free booze getting invited to check out shows that you wouldn’t necessarily seek out. One such act is “Cocktails with the Diva” which is currently on at the Assembly Rooms along the road from Freak Towers on George Street.

Comprising a three piece of keys, double bass and drums all ably backing the Diva, Melinda Hughes, the act performs original comedy songs with a difference to most other comedy songs, the difference being the songs are actually funny, which is nice. The opener is a belter called the Edinburgh Drag and recounts, Ulysses like a typical day planning, plodding and drinking one’s way through the city in August. Glorious. No subject matter is out of bounds and various spectacularly un-PC subjects pepper the songs over the 50 minutes and until last night I never realised that La Senza could rhyme with Marks and Spencer.

The act is on until the 24th if you wish to check them out or have a look at their Freak Music profile here.
