The Dias Quartet mix traditional Brazilian rhythms with funk and jazz beats to produce a heady music full of dance and ambient sounds. Since coming together in April 2005, this foursome have been ripping up a storm with their burning bossas and scintillating sambas and are quickly establishing themselves as the leading purveyors of samba and salsa funk in Scotland.
The Dias Quartet are Reginaldo Dias (Trumpet/Flugehorn/Conch Shell), Bob Maclaren (Guitars/Bouzouki), Angus Rutherford (Bass) and Terry Sloan (Drums). Reginaldo has combined his Brazilian folk talents with a tight funk-jazz rhythm section resulting in a slick smooth sound with a raw undercurrent of pulsating groove.
Reginaldo moved to Scotland from Brazil in 2002. In Brazil he worked in both small and large bands making numerous live recordings for Brazilian radio stations. Now based in Edinburgh Reginaldo continues to work professionally as a session musician in Scotland and England. Londoner Bob Maclaren has nurtured his long-held passion for Brazilian music through trips to South America and the Caribbean. In the Dias Quartet, Bob has brought to the forefront the guitar influences he originally showcased in the Edinburgh jazz, funk and latin sextet, Jafala. The well-respected bassist Angus Rutherford, has played funk and jazz for many years in Scotland, most notably in Funkifize with the ex-Average White Band drummer Paul Mills. Finally, drummer Terry Sloan recently described in the Edinburgh Evening News as 'a direct unfussy performer' with 'nimble fills and in-the-pocket timing' first played jazz in the Edinburgh and Napier University Jazz Orchestras under the tutelage of trumpeter Eddie Severn. Terry has also been fortunate to study with both Sebastian De Krom (Jamie Cullum) and Greg Hutchinson (Diane Reeves).
